"There are saints in Christianity: but a saint only means a man who really knows he is a sinner."
– G.K. Chesterton (“The High Plains,” The Daily News, September 24, 1910)
A Catholic, as Chesterton said, is the last person who would say he is a good Catholic (No Catholic thinks he is a good Catholic; or he would by that thought become a bad Catholic. The Well and the Shallows Chapter One, "The Don and the Cavalier" p. 450). However, we still strive with all our being to become good Catholics, and saints. We just consistently fail, and need constant conversion, we need confession. That is what Lent reminds us of, and now is our chance to truly become meek and humble, with a complete awareness of our sinful nature. We have failed, but we are ever hopeful because of God’s tender mercy.
O Jesus, meek and humble of heart, Hear me. From the desire of being extolled, Deliver me, Jesus.
