I. The Second Coming of Jonah - The Story of the Prodigal Son

Luke 15:11-20

11 To illustrate the point further, Jesus told them this story: “A man had two sons. 12 The younger son told his father, ‘I want my share of your estate now before you die.’ So his father agreed to divide his wealth between his sons.13 “A few days later this younger son packed all his belongings and moved to a distant land, and there he wasted all his money in wild living. 14 About the time his money ran out, a great famine swept over the land, and he began to starve. 15 He persuaded a local farmer to hire him, and the man sent him into his fields to feed the pigs. 16 The young man became so hungry that even the pods he was feeding the pigs looked good to him. But no one gave him anything. 17 “When he finally came to his senses, he said to himself, ‘At home even the hired servants have food enough to spare, and here I am dying of hunger! 18 I will go home to my father and say, “Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, 19 and I am no longer worthy of being called your son. Please take me on as a hired servant.”’20 “So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.

How is the Prodigal Son like Jonah?

Luke 15:17

GK - eautou elown (heauton elthon). Literally the son came to himself or came back to his right mind.

It’s insanity to rebel or run from God’s plan.

What happened to Jonah?

What happened to the Prodigal Son?

What happened to Paul (Acts 9?)

What does the son say in verse 19?

If we want to move from 1 to 2 to 5 and then on to 2, 4 and 10; if we want to fulfill God’s plans and purpose in our lives we must have the same heart. I am satisfied to be a servant in my Father’s house. That is the attitude that God can use.

What did Paul always refer to himself as?

Philippians 2:5-8 (can I have a volunteer from the audience?)

Even Jesus demonstrated this heart.

What did the Father do in the Prodigal Son story?

Has the Father ever done that with you?

II. Moses In Midian (or Heston the Shepherd)

Exodus 2:15b – 3:4

“When Moses arrived in Midian, he sat down beside a well. 16 Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters who came as usual to draw water and fill the water troughs for their father’s flocks. 17 But some other shepherds came and chased them away. So Moses jumped up and rescued the girls from the shepherds. Then he drew water for their flocks.

18 When the girls returned to Reuel, their father, he asked, “Why are you back so soon today?”

19 “An Egyptian rescued us from the shepherds,” they answered. “And then he drew water for us and watered our flocks.”

20 “Then where is he?” their father asked. “Why did you leave him there? Invite him to come and eat with us.”

21 Moses accepted the invitation, and he settled there with him. In time, Reuel gave Moses his daughter Zipporah to be his wife. 22 Later she gave birth to a son, and Moses named him Gershom,[a] for he explained, “I have been a foreigner in a foreign land.”

23 Years passed, and the king of Egypt died. But the Israelites continued to groan under their burden of slavery. They cried out for help, and their cry rose up to God. 24 God heard their groaning, and he remembered his covenant promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 25 He looked down on the people of Israel and knew it was time to act.[b]

Moses and the Burning Bush

3 One day Moses was tending the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro,[c]the priest of Midian. He led the flock far into the wilderness and came to Sinai,[d] the mountain of God. 2 There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a blazing fire from the middle of a bush. Moses stared in amazement. Though the bush was engulfed in flames, it didn’t burn up.3 “This is amazing,” Moses said to himself. “Why isn’t that bush burning up? I must go see it.”

4 When the Lord saw Moses coming to take a closer look, God called to him from the middle of the bush, “Moses! Moses!”

“Here I am!” Moses replied.”

What was Moses doing in Midian?

What did God ask of the Israelites in Jerimiah 29:4-14? (last week)

Moses was doing what had asked the Israelites to do in Jerimiah 29.

As Moses was doing this what did God do?

Moses’ call was born out of His Relationship with God.

What did Moses do?

III.

Romans 11:29

“29 For God’s gifts and his call can never be withdrawn.”

Have you been running like Jonah or the Prodigal Son?

Have you been living your life (marrying, raising kids and worshipping God like Moses?)

You still have been gifted and called and that won’t change.

1 John 2:20,

“20 But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.”

We have the unction to function!

IV. Answer the Call - (Let’s Be Groupies)

Romans 12:4-10,

“ 4 Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, 5 so it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other.6 In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. 7 If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. 8 If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.9 Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good. 10 Love each other with genuine affection,[e] and take delight in honoring each other.”

Ephesians 2:10,

“10 For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”

Jeremiah 29:11,

“11 For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.”

Where are you now? (Running – Living – Answering)

Burning Bush or Still Small Voice?

What is your place?

What is your passion?

What have you noticed God doing around you?

Final Thoughts:

Your Involvement In His Calling Is Born Out Of Your Relationship With Him.

You Effectiveness In His Ministry Is Perfected In Your Relationship With Others

The Being Facilitates The Doing

Be in relationship with God, He will make the opportunities

Be in relationship with others, this is our arena of ministry
